RAISING A MODDY CHILD

As we all know that tantrums, sulking is sort of common in children. however, we all suppose that adults are the one having a serious mood swings, however children also do tend to have mood swings. Mood swings in kids may be a way to vent out their inner feelings and frustration. Firstly, before knowing the way to manage a moody child, we’d like to grasp what specifically is mood and mood disorder. A mood is an emotional state that is lived for a short time period. these moods may change according to the situations. We typically confuse mood with our personality however in reality, they each are distinct areas of a person. We may distinguish it by saying that personality is one which last longer than a mood.

Now what specifically is a mood disorder. if your kid encompasses a mood disorder, his general emotional state or mood is inconsistent which can infer with his/her ability to function. the child could also be empty or irritable or be excessively happy. we can sense some problem when this inconsistent mood infers with the child’s daily life activity.

Examples of mood disorders listed in DSM 4 include

 1) Major depression

2) Dysthymia

3) Post-partum depression

4) Bipolar

The most typical mood disorder found in kids consists of major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, mood disorder because of a general medical condition

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The symptoms in kids differ from adults. these symptoms vary according to the type of mood disorder.

  • More frequent mood changes, sadness, angry, depressed which may be more intense.
  • Lack of motivation for doing any activities.
  • Changes in sleep and eating pattern.
  • Low self-esteem.
  • Frequently letting out anger or outburst of energy.
  • Rebellious and difficulty with peers.
  • Suicidal thoughts.
  • Being hostile and problem with family members

The symptoms in kids and teens may differ from adult symptoms which may sometimes will lead the parent not to recognize the symptoms.

However, there are few steps which a parent should take if the child is moody or have a mood disorder.

1) Make a secure surroundings

Handling a toddler can be little tough for a parent and if the kid is a bit  moody it’s going to be little more difficult. however creating a safe environment for a child to express his or her feelings or thoughts will help the parent . however, we need to remember  that if the child doesn’t have a safe environment will tend to replace the behavior to inappropriate ways , where they’ll show their feelings in an exceedingly unhappy ways or annoying ways.

2) Be Realistic

Kids typically keep a unrealistic goals in life that if they’re unable to realize will lead them to be depressed or discouraged. Parents should help the children to keep realistic goals, if needed decrease the degree of the goals which can help them achieve the goals and conjointly will help them to be more motivated.

3) The underlying meaning

A kid may show his/her feelings or thought in a very totally different approach like they’ll show it through rebellious behavior or they may not even show their inner thoughts. during this scenario a parent plays an even bigger role. Parents should understand the underlying meaning from the kid’s behavior and to do so the key feature is to be patience. Giving youngsters their time, creating them feel safe will facilitate the parent to know them more.

4)  Be calm

Sometimes the child may get angry on tiny things as not obtaining one thing he/she wants, they’ll hit you, bite you and can become physical. Here, if the parent loses his/her temper and begin hitting the child, it’ll solely create matters worse. the parent should learn to keep their calmness in these situations.

The article is very nice, informative, and has an easy language. The tips given to handle the child are very practical and can be easily implemented by parents. But more information about how being moody is different from having a mood disorder could be explained in detail, also the other influential factors for a child to be moody could also be discussed such as the environment school and at home, etc.
