What is Counselling
Both the American counselling association and American psychological Association ( APA) have defined counselling on numerous occasion.some of which follows.
Counselling deals with personal, social, vocational, empowerment and education concerns. Counsellor work only in areas in which they are expertise. Areas may include intra and interpersonal relations to school college adjustments, psychological health, marriage/family issues, employment.
Essential of counselling
Counselling is short – term interpersonal, theory-based processes of helping a person who is psychological distress, resolve development and situational problems.
Important goals of counselling areas: Facilitating Behavioral changes, enhancing skills, improving relationships, enhancing one’s potential. As said by Carl Roger “(1961) facilitating behaviour change is necessary to result in the counselling process.
CONCEPT OF COUNSELLING
Counselling is a technique in which counsellor and client work together to resolve the problem, change behaviour or foster personal growth. The counsellor is a trained professional.
Who is a counsellor :
Word counsellor in Latin means to give advice. A counsellor is an individual who
- Understand the feeling of the client and treats them.
- Keep all the information confidential
- Build self-esteem of the client
- Has patience to resolve and listen to the client problems
- Reassure if the client is insecure.
How does Counselling work?
As technique counselling is about taking control and making changes in behaviour patterns and other issues of the client which they want. By making sense of past and gaining insight to present behaviour and more to the future . Counselling make awareness to the client to build self-esteem.
The client is encouraged to approach counsellor even if they are not sure that they need counselling. Likewise, they approach for
- Academic performance
- Family issues
- Marriage/ relationship issue
- Stress
- Body image concerns
- Trouble in concentrating; studying
- Anxiety
- Anger management
- Grief/loss
Need for counselling
You can say all of us need counselling in some time of our lives, however, it is especially needed when an individual is :
- A person is always irritated
- Angry
- Lack of self-confidence
- Show anxiety
- Lacks the willingness to take any initiative
- Family issues
Steps in the counselling process:
To establish rapport between the client and counsellor :
- Encourage the client to talk about the feeling
- Validate the feeling with reflective listening
- Let the client have a chance to speak
- Provide missing information
- Talk about client goals
- Communicate
- Observer the sign of trouble
- Encourage to develop positive energy towards solutions
- Establish a regular schedule for follow up and give feedback
- Agree on what step what needs to be taken to change and modify the behaviour pattern.
How effective counselling?
A review of a clinical trial in (2003) showed that
Counselling provides short term, a modest improvement in reducing anxiety. Counselling gives good results and gives satisfaction to the client once they end with their session with a counsellor .
