LGBTQ

EVERY TIME SOMEONE STEPS UP AND SAYS WHO THEY ARE, THE WORLD BECOMES A BETTER, MORE INTERESTING PLACE.”

LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning. All these terms describe the varied groups in the gay culture.

Now, let us get into understanding these terms.

The official term “gay” has been always used to describe or what we also call as represent a really diverse group where people who belong to the same gender are quite attracted to each other. It is pertinent to mention that there are various groups within the gay community. Gay is not at all an inclusive term. Diversity among the LGBTQ community contributes to the emergence of different perceptions regarding the term “gay.”

HETROSEXUAL:- often called as straight. These people are attracted to the opposite gender and not the same gender.

HOMOSEXUAL:- often called as gay. It refers to people who are attracted to same gender. Men are attracted to men and also women are also attracted to women.

LESBIAN:- refers to women who are attracted to women or what we call as homosexual.

BISEXUAL:- These people are attracted to both the genders. They are also known as “bi.”

TRANSGENDER:- It is an umbrella term that covers a diversity of different gender expressions. This also includes kings and drag queens.

TRANSGENDERIST:- It describes someone who is gender variant in nature. These people transgress these norms as a part of their real identity.

HISTORY OF LGBTQ SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

Gay rights movement which is also called as homosexual rights movement. Basic demand was equal rights for transgender, gay, lesbians and bisexuals. They also wanted to eliminate sodomy laws from the society which were responsible for barring two consenting adults from doing any kind of homosexual activity. It also demands for an end to discrimination against all the diverse communities that comes under the umbrella term LGBTQ.

The first organization that helped the LGBTQ rights came into existence in the 20th century. Innumerable organizations are currently working for the betterment of LGBTQ community.

Social equality is the most common goal as LGBTQ rights are still denied all over the world. Struggle for achieving equality among the masses is still going on. These movements conduct political activism.

Most of the historians hold this belief that homosexual activity existed in every culture. The dreadful shooting in the history of US is considered to be the hate crime against LGBT as 49 people were dead. But one thing that caught everyone’s attention was the caring attitude of administration and the president itself. It made us realize that acceptance exists.

Unfortunately, homophobia is still prevalent in the society. But LGBTQ community has grown and has become into this large community which spreads across the whole world.

MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION OF LGBTQ COMMUNITY

Mental health should not be the most ignored part of our health as it is a necessary part of everyone’s life. Having a bad day can impact our mental health. Everything that we do or do not do has an impact on our mental health. The LGBTQ community goes through a lot because of the constant harassment, bullying and questioning regarding their sexuality. This also says a lot about our society which still believes in keeping a lot of grudges and prejudices against this community.

People belonging to this community are more likely to suffer mental trauma and they also experience mental illnesses such as anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

LGBTQ IN INDIA

India is a country of diversity and love. It believes in an inclusive approach. Homosexuality is quite a subject of discussion, it’s relevance has been shown in ancient India as well.

On 6th December 2018, the Supreme Court of India delivered a historical judgement decriminalising homosexuality by pulling down Section 377 of IPC.

World’s first openly gay prince joins BJP with 50 transgender because BJP is the only political party who is raising their voice for rights of LGBTQ community.

Recently, Assam became the first state in India to introduce transgender option in Civil Services exam.

UP’s CM Yogi Adityanath made a department for Transgender community in state authority to have a direct look after their rights. They also opened India’s first pride metro station in Noida.Indian government welcomed the Transgender community in the Paramilitary. All of these steps will put an end to the discrimination against this particular society.

This accepting nature and embracing of LGBTQ community is a pure symbol of growth.

Loving, appreciating and accepting each other is what makes us a human.

REFORM AND AWARENESS

June is considered to be the LGBT month. Many organizations and NGOs are more focused about raising awareness about a lot of issues concerning LGBTQ. These organizations also believe in celebrating the accepting and welcoming nature of people. It is because of LGBTQ awareness that many schools in the states have adopted some really nice policies in order to protect the rights of LGBTQ students.

For protection and secured future of LGBTQ students we need some really well-made and effective policies. It is everyone’s responsibility to provide them with a safe and friendly environment.

Many LGBTQ students go through constant workplace harassment which is a really bad thing. All of these issues stemming from constant rejection is really appalling. This makes prone to suicide. LGBTQ college students are also worried about their physical hurt because they are most likely to get hurt.

It sickens me that society has beaten up these people down to the point where they truly feel like outcasts simply because of who they are.

What do you think?
