Domestic Violence Against Men
Every 14.6 seconds, a man gets assaulted by his wife or girlfriend.
This is quite surprising to see that men’s get harmed very often. I’m surprised because generally, we talk more about the domestic violence against the women’s as it is more in numbers. However, I have an instinct that the numbers are less due to the reality that men’s barely expose themselves as victims. Let’s look at this in detailed. First of all, we will get to know what is domestic violence and its forms.
Domestic Violence……
This is a form of offensive attitude in any kind of affairs that is used by one of the partners to attain or preserve power over their close partner. This attitude can be psychological abuses, warnings ( threats, blackmailing), emotional insult (manipulation, pinpointing out the mistakes) or physical (throwing things, beaten up) or financial insult (withholding funds intentionally), or sexual grievance (forcing to have sex) and it can influence any kind of person irrespective of how old they are, their sex, their class.
Different forms:
This abuse can be of three forms namely physical, sexual and verbal.
1) Physical:
When we speak about physical abuse you might think that men will be the culpable one than women but the fact is 12.4% of women’s have used violence against their husbands whereas it is 11.6% of men’s have used violence against their wives.
2) verbal :
It is a kind of abuse which affects the victim mentally and cause psychological disorders. When women are mad at their husbands they tempt to abuse them verbally. It is seen that women expressed equal outrageous as men according to the study. 74 per cent of men and 75 per cent of women in this study revealed that they dedicated at least one psychologically forceful attitude against their spouses.
3) sexual:
It is also found that one of the partners use various ways to make the other to involve in sexual activities. The ways may be drug usage or alcohol. We can also see that when women don’t get satisfied with the men they tend to move out or show aggressive attitude.
The study shows that the cause of violent behaviours is due to anxiety, stress, childhood abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. But in our society, we have seen that only women victims are exposed more than men victims. Let’s see what’s the reason behind the numbers.
The reason behind the numbers:
When we hear or read about domestic violence it’ll be against women’s most of the time. There arises a suspicion that whether men’s are not abused or violence against them are unknown. When I studied about it I found that men’s generally don’t reveal the violence against them for specific reasons. As a confirmation to that, a participant during an observation demonstrated that he was frightened of being giggled at, annoyed, and moreover unexpectedly could be accused of being violent because we do believe that men are strong enough to face all challenges and women only get abused by them often. So men’s cover the abuse because of the difficulties such as inconvenience, embarrassment, rejection, guilt, and a shortage of similar outcome. This is why we aren’t able to get the correct numbers for domestic violence against men’s.
Responses of society to this issue:
This is the place where we have to include the phrase “gender roles in society”. That is society wants us to behave according to our gender. When it comes to men’s, they are expected to be brave, strong and to act as a leader. If they don’t meet the anticipation, then society will criticise them. To avoid that pathetic situation men’s won’t disclose the truth. That is the reason why domestic violence is always noticed as a female victims issue and not as a male victims issue, but the data indicates that this is a wrong resemblance. Approximately we can see that two in five of all sufferers are male. This differs from the dominant opinion that society has in common, that is women are the one always abandoned and got hurt. I read an article that conveys that male sufferers are constantly handled as “underrated sufferers” and that several police officers and commissions don’t take them seriously. “Men’s are basically unseen by the police, who barely exists to accept the man’s perspective,” said John Mays of Parity.
The fact shows that it is society’s pressure which retard the men’s to expose their situation and even when they do they get neglected. This should be changed in the upcoming years.
