Romanticizing Mental Illness

TV shows or movies often romanticize or stigmatize mental illness. Characters with mental illness are portrayed as flawed, beautiful, deep or villainous, crazy, and evil. Social media is a platform for young people to express themselves, but it has become a center for romanticizing mental illnesses. A trend that has been going around is that mental illness is something that should be sought-after. It portrays mental illness as a “tragically beautiful”.

Self-harm scars aren’t beautiful. Having OCD has become closely associated with perfectionism. OCD is not liking things to be neat or in a certain way, it is scrubbing your hands until they bleed because you aren’t convinced that they’re clean. Being depressed, having anxiety, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia is not deep or beautiful, it is serious and millions of people battle with these issues. There is nothing romantic about it.

Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” is hotly debated for it’s wrong portrayal of suicide.  Studies showed that after the show’s release, suicide rates shot up among individuals aged 10-24. TV shows and movies should take in consideration it’s impact on their audience. According to proven research, suicide is contagious.

I don’t think 13 reasons why had portrayed suicide in a wrong way. The character has reasons to do what she did. Not approving such behaviour. The main objective of the very series was to inform people how much their act can effect and affect other’s life. Bullying, sexual abuse and hook-up culture was called out in that series. Yes the scene that they showed when the character commits suicide should have been sensored (which is now) but the suicide rate that shot was only mirrored how flawed people actually are and how much of a need they are in. No offense but next time when you write about any series or movie please clearly mention the reason for calling it out.
Otherwise everything else was on point
