Are You Strong Enough for Yourself?

Are You Strong Enough for Yourself?

Have you ever met an influential personality with an easy past? If yes, then possibly you haven’t really met one. I have met those mentally strong people and at one point, they were the weakest human beings.

They have cried in bathrooms, they know what it takes to lose control over themselves or the
situations. They know loss and remorse too well. In fact, I’m one of them. Earlier, I couldn’t comprehend my actions which created lots and lots of problems in life.

But we learn from our mistakes in this uncertain world. And in all these years, I have discovered a lot of things which helped me in evolving as the person I’m today.

Now, I understand one thing clearly that it is not entirely enough to be mentally strong.

Also, a person needs to be intelligent. As earlier, I used to learn from my mistakes. Today, I learn from the mistakes of other people (especially my friends because they love making mistakes).

No one can be mentally strong in just one day. It requires experience, firmness and resilience.

To stay mentally strong-

  • Look at the past to learn. Don’t stick yourself in there.
  • Recognize your fears which try to hold you back and Don’t run away from your fears.
  • Don’t be afraid to say ‘No’ to people because it leads to mental exhaustion. Just understand one thing, we can’t please everyone in this world.
  • Be responsible for your actions.
  • Don’t focus on the things which you can’t control.
  • Don’t forget that mentally strong people are survivors.

I’m sharing this because I feel it’s very important to be mentally strong. As we all have been through those dark, lonely days.

And I know it’s not easy. I experienced a lot of things and one of the most needed things is to know what to say to a person who is already in a difficult situation.

Taste your words before you serve them

Words play a pivotal role when it comes to mental health. Around 7.5% of the Indian population is suffering from mental health problems, and the situation is more likely to get worsen. In millions of people, merely a few of them get treated.

Why so few?

One of the studies found out the attitude of people towards mental health.

They were asked to describe a mentally ill person?

  • 56% said- the person who talks to themselves
  • 9% said- who are depressed
  • 15% said- mentally ill people are retard
  • 20% said- the people are crazy, mad or stupid.

This depicts the stigma attached to mental health in India.

So, one of the big barriers to seeking treatment is stigma. People have this fear of being labelled with negative sayings, demeaned, and discarded for admitting to someone that they need help.

Stigmatizing words can cause shame and embarrassment to a person and lead to the feelings of hopelessness and loneliness.

People have become so lifeless to the words they utter, they are totally ignorant about the consequences. Your comments can create more problems for them.

So, when you are not aware of anyone’s situation, it’s very important to think before you speak. And if you hear someone spewing those comments, maybe next time you’ll think about pointing that out that person.

Conclusion

Going through the phase of mental illness is a big deal in itself. Don’t make things more difficult for them and try to help people. To get a person better, you need combined efforts of people around him. So, realize the damage you can do by using some unwanted words before it’s too late.

Well conceptualized. The stigma attached is really evident in Indian society. I liked the ways suggested to become mentally strong.

this article is very well written. very subjective and connects easily to like minded people. this must spread to everyone and should realise how important mental health is just like physical health. the stigma in the minds of people must break.

I totally agree that being mentally strong is so important. This is imperative in these unpredictable pandemic times where we all go through immense struggles and we eventually overcome them.

Fighting stigma attached to mental health disorders is so important. Thank you for touching upon it and emphasizing the need for a more inclusive society.

I really appreciate your efforts. The concluding line about being mindful about the words we use is really good because now a days, people displace their anxiety onto others without realising it.
