What is Overthinking: Causes and Effects

Overthinking

The mind is the temple of the soul. What is in a person’s mind, can determine a person’s character. But sometimes, we tend to think too much, which affects our day-to-day activities. This condition is known as overthinking.

Overthinking is a psychological condition in which the minds tends to think too much, and worry too much, about some topics that either affected a person in the past, or will affect a person in the future. Think of Overthinking as pop-up advertisements /notifications in a website. If there are too many of such pop-up advertisements /notifications in a particular website, the website tends to lag and slow down. Similarly, overthinking tends to slow down and affect our normal thinking process, since we have a lot of unwanted thoughts in our mind. Overthinking hinders our capacity to think critically, and we do absurd things, without thinking properly. People who tend to overthink a lot are also very antisocial, shy and keep a distance from other people.

Reasons for Overthinking

There are many reasons for a person to overthink situations. Overthinking might be triggered due to a past incident or trauma that is haunting the person, or the person has an irrational fear (phobia) of something or someone. The trauma or irrational fear is stored in the mind as a core memory, and whenever the person has a bad incident, this memory gets triggered. The mind starts to think about the various possibilities that can occur, and the person starts to panic. Sometimes, due to overthinking, the person may even experience a panic attack, during which the person starts sweating profusely, turn red, and may even faint. A panic attack is basically the mind shutting down due to the overload of negative and pessimistic thoughts.

Overthinking is more common among lonely, depressed and differently-abled people. Loneliness and depression increase overthinking exponentially. If a person does not have anyone with whom he can share his thoughts, he is more likely to overthink and curse his fate. Depression is a vicious cycle. A person falls into depression due to the negative thoughts in his mind. Depression makes the person to overthink even more. This goes on and on and the person goes deeper into the pit of depression. If not diagnosed properly at the right time, excessive overthinking may lead to serious psychological and mental problems later on.

Controlling our thoughts

How do we control overthinking and our negative thoughts? It is said the person who has control over his mind and thoughts, has control over the world. If a person has control over his mind, he can overcome any obstacle. A free and peaceful mind also ensures that you are productive to the maximum extent. Controlling one’s mind is not an easy task, but it can be achieved with proper mind training and exercise. Doing Yoga and meditation daily helps reduce overthinking to a large extent. Exercising regularly not only helps our mind but also makes us think positively and have a positive outlook on the various struggles and hardships that we face. Talking to a close friend or a relative during hardship or a difficult situation reduces stress and eases the burden on the mind. Lastly, believing in yourself helps a lot to alleviate negative thoughts and perform better.

Overthinking is not really taken as an issue sometimes because some people refer it to analyzing a situation, while on the contrary it actually eats up your energy to perform daily tasks or even take a situation normally. a great article to help people know the difference between analyzing and over-analyzing a situation or matter.
