Understanding Sports Psychology

So until now, we have come to the conclusion that psychology revolves around everything we do. Be it the clothes we wear, the thoughts we think, the challenges we go through and many more. Everything when broken down can lead up to the root cause of it and hence, psychology can be used. Same way in sports we can say that to be true.

How many times do we feel like we could have achieved something in sports but there was something missing, even if there was not and you did your best? You still feel like you just did not achieve what you had set out to do and that leaves you all sad and angry towards the game and you are more likely to mess up your next game. This is when sports psychology comes in. So let me tell you a short story from personal experience.

I am an active sportsperson. I play the game of archery apart from the many more I have played at a few levels in school. Albeit, archery remains my top game.

So when I say it was my top game, I mean it. I had never lost a competition, not even a second-place or third place. For two years consecutively, I had been winning and winning. So this one time at a competition I did not. It made me really upset. And instead of making up a better mindset for the next game, I went in with a worse one than before. And then began my streak of losing the easiest competitions, not winning first place and everything.

It really impacted me. Because I was good at this and I just could not get why it was happening to me. So I was asked to visit a sports psychologist and I did. And that was when things started to change. Not instantly, but it was within a matter of a few months that I was already doing way better than how I went.

In fact, it gave me more motivation to go further and further, until the day I won a national tournament. That was my moment of glory and I owe a lot to my therapist. So this made all the difference there ever could be.

That is why it is important that know what sports psychology is and how it can help us. Because it really can. And more importantly, it is a much-needed thing, even if you consider yourself to be somebody who does not like sports or is not into things like that. It is necessary that we are aware of this.

Let us take a closer look at what sports psychology really is

What is sports psychology?

So basically, sports psychology is said to be how is psychology affects sports, your daily work out activities, how the kinetics really work, your exercises, and basically your physical activities. Sports psychology really comes in handy if you are a sportsperson or you know somebody who is. It is an important and very necessary aspect of our lives.

Sports psychologist are hired by big game companies to work with them so that their players can get every sort of help they need. Be it emotionally or mentally. You see playing sports is tricky, you do not have a definitive outcome and sometimes you face things and you come across some failures which can really put you down. And many people stay down after going through something like that. It is kind of hard trying to go on. We need to understand that there is no shame in asking for help because help is available. This is why sports psychology is important. So that people can get up after going down like that. So that they can see and understand how good they really are and that it is okay to go up and down like that. It only means that there is more to you than meets the eye.

Major topics of sports psychology

Well, there are a few topics that are covered in sports psychology. Let us take a look at them.

Attention:

It is also said to be an attentional focus. So this is supposed to redirect your attention from the fans and their screaming to your game. We have witnessed that many sportspeople find this distracting and thus, it is useful for them to know this.

Imagery:

So basically in imagery, what a psychologist asks a sportsman to do is to visualize their performance in the next match. You think about you are going to perform and how high can you go.

Motivation:

As I have mentioned this before, this is a very important factor to be considered when dealing with sports psychology. We, humans, have a natural tendency to raise questions of self-doubt on every wrong turn. Sports psychologist help us overcome this. Whether it may be a bad match, or that you are recovering from an injury which has stopped you from playing a match, and in the end acting as a morale booster for the team. Sports psychology revolves around these ideas and thoughts.

How sports psychology is beneficial to athletes

When we talk about sports psychology, it is naturally essential to talk about athletes. So let us take a closer look at how sports psychology is useful to the athletes and what impact it can have on them.

Confidence:

Sports Psychology aims at building confidence in a sportsperson. Many times, people face the problem of having low self-esteem and they might beat themselves up because of it. Well, it is simple. They should not. They should learn to be confident and go do what they do best. This is a basic principle of sports psychology.

Intensity skills:

It is very important to know the intensity factor when considered in the matters of what sport you play. You can not make it the only thing in your life and not do anything else, nor can you become too laid back and overconfident about it because that does not help either. You need to find a balance in your life when it comes to sports and that is where sports psychologists come in. They help you maintain that balance in your life.

Communication Skills:

Another aspect of sports psychology is developing communication skills. So that you bond better with your team or your partner. It is important to work with your partner beforehand and go through some sort of an emotional journey as well with them so that you have a better understanding of the game. Sports psychology helps with this as well. Their main task is to look at such things and help players better their emotional skills.

With that, we come towards the end of this article. Hopefully, I will be writing more on this in my next articles.
