Who is a caregiver? Importance of “CAREGIVER”

Who is a caregiver?

A caregiver is a member of a person’s social network who helps them with activities of daily living.

As they don’t have specific progressional training, they are described as informal caregivers.

Duties of CareGiver:-

  • Taking care of people who are in chronic illness or disease
  • Managing medications or talking to doctors on someone else’s behalf
  • Helping to bathe or dress someone as they are disabled or frail
  • Taking care of people due to loss of memory, anxiety, depression or disabling condition
  • Taking care of household chores, meals and taking care of formal and informal documents related to health for someone who can’t do these things

Let’s talk about

TYPES OF CAREGIVERS

FAMILY CAREGIVER:- A family caregiver is your relative.

It can be your partner, friend, mother, or anyone else.

They provide you financial, emotional, nursing, social services on a daily basis or intermittent basis for an ill or disabled loved one at home.

Family Caregivers volunteer their time, without pay, to help with the care needs of a loved one.

PROFESSIONAL CAREGIVER:- A progressional caregiver is a hired person who provides care to the receiver.

These caregivers can provide you with medical or non-medical care at home or facility centre.

Their work is to assist the person who is suffering and enables them to live independently. Professional caregiver works for an agency.

INDEPENDENT CAREGIVER:- Independent caregiver are not appointed by any agency.

They are employed directly by the family and there is no intermediary agency between the care recipient and the caregiver.

INFORMAL CAREGIVER:- An informal caregiver is typically a family member who provides care and is unpaid.

It slightly differs from a family caregiver. In that, an informal caregiver is directly related to the care receipt.

The family caregiver can also be neighbour or friend.

VOLUNTEER CAREGIVER:- A volunteer caregiver is a person who usually works in either respite or hospice care.

They provide breaks for someone who is caring for an adult with a disability, chronic illness or frailty.

They provide non-medical companionship, supervisor and friendly nature with special needs so that the caregiver has some time away.

Care Giver is especially for “ELDERLY PEOPLE

Caregiving for OLDER ADULTS:- When compared to young people older people needs more caregiving.

As older people are more likely to have cancer and other health issues they need caregivers.

Adults over the age of 65 are more likely to have blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and conditions which might affect the heart, lungs and kidneys.

Older adults might have problems like memory loss also.

Adults with cancer often have different needs than younger people.

If you take care of an older adult, cancer might be just one condition they need help with.

The importance of caregivers is recognized over the years and not only to increase the awareness but also to appreciate the work done by caregivers; The month of November is recognized as National Family Caregivers Month.

They are useful in all possible manners.

Caregivers can also give you emotional support such as if you face a serious diagnosis; you may have physical and emotional turmoil.

They can help you with encouragement and always supporting you. Communication is the key to every relationship. It can be between the caregiver and the patient.

Any amount or Money cannot compensate “CAREGIVER”

Caregivers take a lot of care of you in all possible manners.

They help you not only with physical work but also mentally.

Any amount of money can’t compensate for their work.

As communication is very important if your caregiver is a family member then you don’t have to worry about anything.

You broke the concept in a very systematic way. Very often we do not see this through and really reaaally get what it is like to be a caregiver. I must confess it is a difficult task. Developing empathy and putting someone before us while sacrificing some parts of ourselves and acknowledging the fact of how important this is for us and for the society we live in.

Thank you, thank you for writing this Riya

This is indeed a very interesting and new topic that I have red in a while. We talk about the importance of mental health and various disorders alot, but we often forget to mention the people who stand behind us to support us. This article can be viewed as a regard for them.
