Men’s Mental Health.

Men’s Mental Health.

Men’s mental health is being called a silent crisis. Mental health issues are less talked about in men because of societal expectations.

They are expected to display what has been traditionally perceived as masculine traits like aggression, dominance, strength, and control.

Research suggests that the pressure to be “a man” negatively affects their mental health. We, as a society teach everyone that men should be tough, men should be strong.

Weakness is not considered as masculine.

But what exactly is your idea of weakness?

And what does the word strong mean to you? Ask yourself.

Why do we in this 21st century have to abide by these stereotypes?

This behaviour is a barrier preventing men from seeking help. Talking about their feelings is viewed as “weak and unmanly”. It is easier for them to talk about physical issues, rather than mental issues.

This mindset about masculinity is the reason behind men’s general lack of interest in mental health. Because of the negativity and societal expectations, men’s mental health can be masked.

Too many men suffer because of this. They let out their depression, anxiety, whatever they are feeling by drinking excessively, behaving aggressively, and having irrational and hostile thoughts. And if their mental health keeps deteriorating, then they can become suicidal.

The suicide rate among men is higher than women. Men suffer in silence because of the pressure to behave in a certain way and shame that they are not man enough. Breaking the stigma around men’s mental health is very important. So let’s start by educating ourselves and spreading awareness about it.

What do you think?

I liked your idea . You’ve given the hints how we teach men all the wrong things and then expect them to be someone else. We as a society fail when it comes to men’s mental health . We really have messed it up( Thanks for bringing it up!

Very well put. Stereotyping men have always been a major problem and most men end up drinking as a cure to their stress or mental health.

This article has a very special significance for me. The behind is that mens mental health is the topic I have always been very keen to work upon. The way the society has ignored mens mental health is of a major concern.

Men are considered to be tough, bold , strong. And so, they are trapped in a vicious circle of being other’s strengths, being there for others, keeping in their own. Normalize men crying. having outbursts. being expressive. being themselves. and not having to be trapped in society’s expectations. normalise men doing self care.
THANKYOU FOR PUTTING IT UP:) SENDING VIRTUAL HUGS TO ALL THE MEN OUT THERE:)

DJ

Ah, I really wish there’d be more and more and more people realizing this truth and accepting men for their issues- be it mental, be it physical or be it anything outside of the ‘masculine’ personality.
Hope many many people read this article and reflect on it and give you a helping hand in bringing positive change in society.
Keep going!

Caren Mascarenhas

Its great that people are finally coming out and realizing the pressure being put on men as they are expected to do big and great things in the future. And they shouldn’t sit and suffer in silence anymore. Men’s mental health should be considered as important as their physical health. A simple yet empowering topic chosen, amazing work!

This article unfolds the truth that everyone knows of, yet not much speak about it. When it comes to mental health, it is not wise to differentiate between genders and instead, treat everyone the same. Because at the end of the day, be it a man or woman, everyone has their own struggles. Beautifully written!

Crisp and brief but well-written!!!! Both genders equally suffer, nonetheless, in a patriarchal society issues specific to gender need to be addressed. Very resourceful! Keep writing!!!!

A very very important topic! Kudos to you for starting a conversation about it! Very true men’s mental health has been invalidated for so long! Change needs to occur! Only suggestion I’d give is that this article was a little short and you could add ways in which we can bring change and awareness to this problem.

Cheers! 🙂

This silent crisis can only be tackled by giving proper attention to the ways of upbringing children irrespective of gender. Young parents are making efforts in this generation to bring up their kids in an environment of equality.

Shruti Shashidharan

Men have been so conditioned to not express emotions, it has a negative impact on their mental well being. This article is informative and highlights the importance of conversation around men’s mental health. Great work!!!

Kritika

A must read topic. More recommendations to promote men’s mental health and how to eradicate the streotypes although it has got to deal with an individual’s mindset might make this article more interesting.
