IMPACTS OF ECONOMIC CRISIS ON MENTAL HEALTH:

IMPACTS OF ECONOMIC CRISIS ON MENTAL HEALTH:

Mental health is very important as physical health. Many of us would not take care of our mental health as we take care of our physical health. Due to a lack of awareness among people they just regret their mental health. It is well known that mental health problems are related to deprivation, poverty, inequality, and other social and economic determinants of health. Economic crises are therefore times of high risk to the mental well-being of the population and of the people affected and their families.

It is not that people get sad or depressed for one particular factor or one particular situation.it contains many reasons and situation that affects one’s individual mental health.

In those, the economic crisis is also one of the most important factors that affect mental health. Why because economic status and economic condition is a basic factor that affects an individual. For eg

If a man is poor and does not have any family support or financial support he will face many problems mentally, he doesn’t have stability in life he will be facing poverty and financial issues in such cases the mental health of the person will be badly affected.

The depression and stress level have been increased highly in the countries which have a strong economic crisis because the total economic condition of the country has been downed so in the case of individual mental health are also affected.

In this economic crisis, both employed and unemployed will face difficult situations, why because they could not meet their basic requirements. In this comparison to women, men are more depressed. Because even though women go to work nowadays but most of the men manage these financial situations at home so they get more stress and depressed that how they are going to manage.

For eg; during this pandemic lockdown the whole country is facing an economic crisis, everyone cannot continue their works are locked in their houses in that when nobody is going to work the economic crisis will come down and the mental health of the people gets affected.

ECONOMIC VS MENTAL HEALTH:

As you see economic and mental health are interlinked. The individual is living in a particular country he works in that country and if the economic status of that country is not good and if the individual has not had proper income automatically he will undergo stress and depression. So that economic condition and mental health are interrelated. As the government should see that every citizen is not suffering from poverty and had basic requirements like food and shelter.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF GOVERNMENT REGARDING MENTAL HEALTH:

The government should take responsibility to spread awareness about mental health. As everybody knows that physical health is important but only a few of us know the importance of mental health. So the government should give some awareness and priority to mental health, like mental health awareness programs and mental health campaigns. So that people get aware that both mental and physical health is important. When the government is amending or proposing a law or order that should not affect the citizen’s mental health.

For eg, in the case of GST that is a big stress and pressure on every citizen. Many of the poor people do not have money to fill their basic needs in this case how will he or she pay the GST also. This is a big burden and stress for every citizen. So the government should see that when they propose a law.

Mental health needs a great deal of attention. It’s the final taboo and it needs to be faced and dealt with.

I like that you included a call to action in your article! The government needs to realise that the mental health crisis that is following the economic crisis is going to have terrible consequences and it needs to step up to support it’s citizens.

Hello Gajalakshmi,
This is such an informative and clear article. Due to this rising pandemic the economic conditions have fallen to a great degree. This fall in economy has put a lot of pressure on individuals. To prevent such crisis the government has to ensure that no family is left hungry and help them with financial support. Hope this article can help individuals who are going through crisis due to fall in economy. Great work!

In the time of a pandemic, this is a very great content. A lot of people have been through a lot during this time that has affected their mental health. But a suggestion from my side would be to add the impact of economic crisis on the mental health of people who run small businesses as well.

Kritika

The government can also tell people about how to sustain financially by involving in small businesses so that it can be their part time job. Well written one.

Niranjana

It is a profound article with well written information. But maybe you could add some information about ngos or government programs that exists to help people in such situations?
