That's what my mother has been saying to me ever since I was young. I'd read the word psychiatrist in my GK book when I was in 5th grade and that's when I had decided that I wanted to be that type of a doctor. That's when I was first Introduced to anything related to psychology.

For a long time and even now, some of my family members and relatives used to think that i got the craze for becoming a psychologist from the movie "Bhool Bhulaiya", that's far from the truth.

I passed high school and prepared for NEET but after 2 attempts and a drop year, I was still unable to secure a seat in any government mbbs college. So my parents decided to send me abroad or another option they gave me was choosing dentistry, BHMS Or BAMS.

But that's when I decided that i would go for a psychology hons. degree. Of course my entire family was against it. We had so much tension in the house because my mom didn't want me to go in that field. She never wanted me to. There were fights and debates everyday. On one side, I was trying to show them why I should do it while on the other hand they would tell me why some other course was better for me. But in the end, they gave in.

And on my first day in college, I got to learn the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist. And I was so thankful for where God put me because that day I realized that I wouldn't really have wanted to become a psychiatrist after all. And ever since, there wasn't a moment where I regretted my decision. I love this field and I've decided to stay in this field whatever happens.

@parishreepandya it takes a lot if courage to stand for what you want and believe in when everyone around you says different. The fact that people still see subject that come under humanities or arts as an hobby rather than a career subject amazes me because these are the people who eventually build the society be it journalists, politicians. Professor or psychologist. So many people who have an ambition to go in these fields get derailed due to familia pressure, it nice to see someone who stood for herself. Have a wonderful journey! 🙂

I am glad you were able to break out of the stigma and do what you love. Now as Psychology students it is our responsibility to help others break out of it and destigmatize mental health.

That's honestly so nice to hear, the fact that you found what makes you happy and don't have to question your decisions anymore. Arguing about career options really can be very stressful sometimes, and it must have been a rough time sigh, I'm so glad you made it here. Its really nice to be hearing such stories in the discussion!

Hey Parishree, that was a brave and courageous fight buddy. When we start listening to what our inner soul says I hope we will never regret for a decision made. Highs and lows are common so why don't we give it a try...stay positive , stay happy and keep going.

That is quite a story here! I hope your passion never dulls and that you reach heights. Do not get carried away by the struggles of clients that you counsel in future. Do not take them personally. Just do your part and wait for things to unfold. All the best!

I've felt the same too, negative reactions from my family members, when I said I wanted to study Psychology. But I stayed true to my dream, and now I'm so glad to continue studying psychology! 🙂
