Coping with fear, anxiety and stress in today world
Fear
It is a common natural human emotion. It is triggered by threat of harm, real or imagined. It can be countable and uncountable too. The difference between fear and phobia is the “feeling uneasy at the sight of a spider” is Fear where as phobia is “Avoid going outside because they might see a spider”.
Some of the myths about fear is Fear is a weakness, predators can smell your fear, Phobias stem from traumatic incidents. Some of the fact about fear is Fear is not the enemy, Fearful thoughts are designed to keep you safe and limited and a surge of fear tends to arise directly after a moment of truth.
Ways to cope up with fear :
- Adopt 80/20 Rule (pareto principle)
- Action reduces fear (eg : to overcome stage fear – start to do stage performance)
- Move towards fear factor
- Verbalise the Fear
- Positive affirmation words
- Keep body language confident
- Talk to your well-wisher
- Focus on the success
- Have a strategic plan (Plan A and Plan B)
- Thinking about pain is more painful than pain
- Set a deadline and act, no matter how big it is
- Develop a fighter attitude , love your pain
Anxiety
It is Fear of outcome. It arises when we feel pressured. Both fear and anxiety is a constant for all. It has biological reactions. If you pay attention and loosen up your muscle means it helps you to reduce the anxiety level. Another way to overcome the anxiety is to change your negative automatic thought into positive one. Some of the myths about anxiety is anxiety isn’t real illness, anxiety will go away on its own, people with anxiety should not avoid stressful situations
According to the recent research 17.0% of Australians aged 16 to 85 have experienced an anxiety and affective disorder in the past 12 months. This is equivalent to 3.2 million people today. Some of the facts of anxiety is social anxiety and being shy are not same, anxiety disorders are often not noticeable, symptoms of anxiety are persistent and usually require treatment to subside.
Stress
It arise when a person inability to manage the pressure. Every one reacts differently when stress occurs in life. It all about your genetic makeup, personal development, life experiences, beliefs and emotions. Some of the symptoms of stress are headaches, sexual problems, stomach problems. The common cause of school student stress is upcoming tests, too much homework, poor sleep schedule.
Stressors particular to COVID-19
When caregivers are in quarantine or when there is no support there is a risk of deterioration of the physical and mental health of individuals who are more vulnerable. Risk of being infected and infecting other, especially when the mode of corona virus transmission in not completely clear.
Ways to cope up with Stress and Anxiety :
- Take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news
- Take care of your health. Do some exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep , eat healthy foods and avoid alcohol.
- think about the funny things
- take the things around you and say ” I touched this remote “
- imagine that you are floating in the bubble
- being with a person who makes you feel safe
- Deep Breathing : It is a practice that helps to calm your nerves and reduce the stress and anxiety. It also help to improve the attention span , lower pain levels and reduce the sleeping problems too. Method : Take a 2 – 3 deep breathing during the stress/anxiety/depression you can breath In through nose and breath out through your mouth…
- Zen Meditation – Just Be (accept it as it is). Zen Meditation is observing and letting go the thoughts and feelings that arise in the mind stream and as well developing insight into the nature of body and mind. Zen practice help to cope with the anxiety, stress and depression issues.

Mental health is important as well as the physical health. We can able to cope with our fear, anxiety and stress easily if we recognize it all. Mental health problems have nothing to do with being lazy or weak and many people need help to get better. Studies show that people with mental health problems get better and many recover completely.
