What to include in a Good Mental Health Journal

Often times we all must have heard that journaling has a positive impact on both our mental and physical health. The top 5 benefits of keeping a journal can be
+ Helps reduce stress
+Keeps your memory in check
+Improves immune health
+Helps strengthen emotional functions
+Boasts Mood

Now as we became familiar with the benefits of keeping a journal we often times get confused on what to add to our mental health journal. So here are a few points that will help you to organise your mental health journal in a better way:

1. Write down the things or thoughts that make you feel anxious then try to break those thoughts into questions like
# what’s the worst case scenario that can happen to you.
# then write the worst case scenario that can happen to you realistically.
# then write down how realistic the worry is.
# then write down what you can learn from this situation.
# now after the identification of what is making you anxious and what can be the worst case scenario list down the points that you can do to tackle this problem or how to make things better.
# if there is something that you can do to make the situation better work on it but if there isn’t sit back and try to relax and remind yourself that everything can not be controlled by you so there is no need to be this anxious.

2. Write down the things that you learned in life from anywhere be it a book, a movie or your own life event that you would like to remember and then reflect on it later.

3. List down the things that you are grateful about be it people or something else.

4. Write down something positive about you when you feel positive.

5. List down your boundaries that you would like to have and crossing those by any would not be acceptable by you.

6. Now this is a thing used during therapy but can be used by you in your journal, in this you write down the automated (out of control) negative thoughts that you have and try to put them on trial example write down the thought and see how realistic it is, write down the evidence to prove if they are fake or true. If it’s fake let that thought pass away if it seems true try point no. 1 on that thought.

7. Write list of things that you would like to look forward in life.

8. List down ways in which you can enjoy your present situations more.

9. If you want to make a decision and are confused about what to do list down the pros and cons of the decision. It will make it easier for you to decide the best option.

10. Write down a good message for your future self and come back to it in the future.

Journaling is a personal and intimate act for many where they pour their heart out. It’s not necessary for you to include all the above points mentioned in your journal but they can be a good headstart for anyone who is new to keeping a journal. If someone wants more points they can let me know and I’ll help anyone who needs it.

What do you think?

Jhanvi, this is such an important topic you have taken up!
As someone who as on and off journey with journals, I feel your article is a gentle reminder that a journal is personal and there is no need to make it perfect.

However, you could have elaborated the ideas such as habit trackers; post-therapy thoughts; journal prompts; positive self-talk page ; rant pages, along with images of each to make it an interactive and wholesome article.

But I loved your suggestions too and the fact that you mentioned that you will help people if they need. That is so kind!

Holding a diary allows you to build order when you have the impression of a chaotic world. By sharing your most private fears, thinking and emotions, you come to know yourself. See your time of writing as your personal time of relaxation. It’s a time to cool down and de-stress. Write down in a quiet spot, maybe with a cup of tea. Expect your time in the media. And know that for your mind and body you are doing something good. Nice article. Keep up the good work.
