I'm currently a 2nd year MBBS student in GMC KOLHAPUR Maharashtra state. Many people often confuse these two terms. We have Psychiatry subject in the final yr of MBBS curriculum. My love for psychology is more than that of psychiatry.
Many people get psychiatrists and psychologists confused with each other.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors, psychologists are not. Psychiatrists prescribe medication, psychologists can't. Psychiatrists diagnose illness, manage treatment and provide a range of therapies for complex and serious mental illness. Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help patients.
Both psychiatrists and psychologists understand how the brain works, our emotions, feelings and thoughts. Both can treat mental illness with psychological treatments (talking therapies).
However, psychiatrists attend medical school and become medical doctors before doing specialist training in mental health. Because they are doctors, psychiatrists understand the links between mental and physical problems. They can also prescribe medications.

I'm glad you pointed out the difference between the two. It was very important I think. It is very important to know that both have different roles and qualifications. The counselors or psychologists cannot give prescriptions and both have some ethical boundaries. It becomes very necessary hence that people are made aware about it.
It is good that you spoke about this major difference between the two linked but yet different fields. All the best:).
