Alien hand syndrome

Alien hand syndrome is a rare neurological condition. It is also known as Dr. Strangelove syndrome or anarchic hand. In this syndrome, one hand starts to work on its own free will. The hand isn’t under the control of the mind. The affected hand feels foreign to its owner during these episodes and seems to carry out tasks that are unintentional.

It usually occurs in adults. Alien hand syndrome may occur after neurosurgical procedures, particularly when there is an incision involving the corpus callosum. Stroke, trauma and cancer are some of the neurogenerative diseases causing this syndrome. The areas of motor cortex or supplementary motor cortex can also be affected. A doctor may diagnose alien hand syndrome through observation and evaluation.

The condition may be treated or managed using muscle control therapies. Behavioral techniques seem to be
beneficial. MirrorMirror box therapy, cognitive therapy techniques, and learning task behavioral therapies can help manage symptoms.

Alien hand syndrome is a phenomenon in which one hand is not under control of the mind. The person loses control of the hand, and it acts as if it has a mind of its own. The etiology includes neurosurgery, tumor, aneurysms, and rarely stroke.
