MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS
- It is also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
Symptoms –
- Post exertional Malaise (PEM) – deterioration of physical, cognitive and psychological functioning.
- Orthostatic intolerance – symptoms worsen when standing upright and relieve when reclining.
- Inability to carry out normal day activities due to profound fatigue
- Disturbed sleep
- Cure – not known ; cause – not known (speculated to be a combination of environmental and genetic factors)
- More prevalent in women – can mimic other diseases and women are doubly affected as many have comorbid conditions that trigger the condition.
- Myalgia – muscle pain, encephalomyelitis – brain inflammation
- The meaning of the name suggests that a brain inflammation is observed accompanying muscle pain which is not the core symptom and hence people recommend a name change of this disorder.
- ME/CFS has clear biological abnormalities but the cause of these wide range of abnormalities are not known.
- Depression and anxiety are only responses to fatigue and so are not the potential causes.
- One is diagnosed with ME only when the disorder persists for 6 months or over 6 months.
- This disorder needs immense research to be carried out to get a clear understanding of its causes, treatments, gender differences, prevalence and various other factors.
Good article, but needs more detail
Was a good read. It is an increasing disease and millions of people are suffering from this and yet a cure is not found and each individual is treated differently based on their symptoms which is a bit sad. It is good to see articles spreading awareness of such and get people and understanding and hence care better for people who are suffering from the same. Good work!
this is a nice choice of topic but it needs more content and information as a passage or paragraph style.
Love the topic but the article lacks details and a proper organization. Would really love if the article was more comprehensive, describing the disease, causes and the treatment options available.
Very crisp description of myalgic encephalomylitis
