ADHD (ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER)

INTRODUCTION

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder. ADHD is currently diagnosed in children and adults based on symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity. Symptoms of inattention include making common or silly mistakes or having difficulty focusing or maintaining attention, whereas symptoms of hyperactivity include restlessness or not sitting still in one place or fidgeting.

Individuals with ADHD have issues with learning as they show a lack of concentration and can’t centre one spot at a time.

Learning disability could include the inability of visual inspection ability, verbal comprehension, non-verbal reasoning. The IQ( Intelligent quotient) is less than 70, which constitutes learning disability.

All things considered, ADHD isn’t itself a learning disability. An individual with ADHD can debilitate the individual of his/her learning capacity. Learning can be exceptionally challenging to the person with ADHD as the individual lacks in concentration.

ADHD IN CHILDREN

Children with ADHD have an excessive amount of energy which is not known to be seen in any other child not having ADHD. They do not listen to what they are spoken to and keeps on fidgeting with their hands or whatever they get in front of them. They also do get into trouble at school for not sitting in a place and jumping and running over here and there. They keep on talking and interrupting the class. It is not always that all ADHD children are both inattentive and hyperactive. Some show symptoms of inattentiveness whereas others might show symptoms of hyperactive. Some can show both the symptoms.

ADHD IN ADULTS

In adults, ADHD can cause a lot of problems in their colleges and offices or in their workplaces. Most of the times they do not have the patience to write down notes or listen to their teachers. Within friends or colleagues, if they start talking, they talk continuously without break, which the other person may find bothering. They have difficulty motivating themselves and also in completing tasks. There have also been cases of failed marriages for ADHD patients as they might not listen always what the other person is trying to say. Also, they forget a lot and they procrastinate.

Many individuals who were diagnosed with ADHD as kids continue to remain the same during their adulthood as well. It is seen that out of a hundred children, 80 children still has ADHD when they are grown up. Which also means there is a chance that those 20 children might not continue with ADHD later.

There are many co-morbid disorders that occur with ADHD, for example, they are at a higher risk of developing depression, substance abuse disorders, bipolar disorders, anti-social disorders in adolescents and adults. Even individuals with ADHD shows criminology tendency. In prison, about 25% of prisoners have been diagnosed with ADHD.

CONCLUSION

Individuals having ADHD have difficulty focusing and concentrating. They tend to be hyperactive and over impulsive. Children mostly show the symptoms of hyperactive. Whereas the adults are mostly inattentive. Quite often people of ADHD have mood swings and often have anxiety and depression. They also have difficulties in managing projects which means they are unable to plan ahead. Diagnosing ADHD can bring a huge change in an individual’s life as they are becoming aware of themselves and accepting them as they are. Not all people remains the same, many people after treatment and therapies have seen changes.

Sohini, you’ve articulated everything beautifully. Needless to mention the fact that your article reminded me of everything i learned about in grade 12th haha. Also, i really didn’t know that some people with ADHD show a criminal tendency and may even have an anti-social orientation. Thankyou so so much for enhancing my knowledge. You can also add that they have a difficulty in following multiple instructions/directions, simultaneously at one time in the part where you’ve specified the lack of concentration that they show towards different tasks.
And, your article’s perfect! Well doneee!
