Depression is not just in mind

“Depression”- a term which has become very common since past few years. People often use this term for mere sadness. Some people even say that depression is just in our mind and to remain happy and productive it is completely in our hand. But depression is much more than just being sad. Feeling useless, worthless and lonely are major part of someone’s life undergoing depression.

Last year, I was going through tough times in terms of health and academics. I remember how unproductive I became at that time. I used to have difficulty in getting up from the bed. I used to sleep because that was an escape. Even falling asleep was a big task for me. I used to alienate myself from family and friends. Somehow I overcame that phase. Healing is a long process. Even after you feel better but you suddenly get some flashbacks, you need to fight with your own thoughts and get up.

One in 20 Indians suffers from depression. Clinical depression may include feeling miserable, empty or detached or just not wanting to do anything. But it can be treated through cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation etc.

I completely agree! Depression, especially in Indian Society is always viewed as the person being sad. You have mentioned how it is also feeling worthless, lonely and many other feelings at the same time. I feel like we need more articles like this to create awareness among people/ and also to break the misconception.
Thank you for writing about your personal experience. Here’s wishing you well.
