Reye’s Syndrome.
Medicine, something that’s become so pivotal to a healthy lifestyle. Let it be a small cold or a global pandemic, Medicine is our get-go. We take so much care about our physical body right? Got a scar, remove it. Caught a cold, cure it. But how many of us pay an equal amount of attention to our mental health? Do we take care of our mental scars as we take care of our physical scars? Let’s talk about one such mental illness, Reye’s Syndrome.
About:
Reyes Syndrome, defined as acute noninflammatory encephalopathy, is a rare mental illness that has serious effects on one’s mind and body. Its usually observed in children of age 4-12 years. It causes confusion, Swelling in the Brain, and occasionally liver damage. This may lead to personality disorders as well. The symptoms include diarrhea, rapid breathing, vomiting, fatigue, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness. In the case of latter symptoms, immediate medical care is required.
Usually, it is caused by the intake of medicinal drugs such as aspirin at a young age. Although it’s extremely rare, it is believed as a Seasonal disease running from December through April. The exact reason for its cause is yet to be uncovered, but it’s observed in patients recovering from a viral infection.
Cure:
As the Reyes Syndrome is still a mystery, no proper cure has been invented for it. Children suffering from it are usually hospitalized and kept in the I.C.U. Doctors try to neutralize the symptoms and reduce them which to date remains the only method of healing for it.
We all know, “Prevention is better than cure”. So how do we prevent it? Simple, whenever our children are requested to intake aspirin, make sure that their current vaccines include varicella (chickenpox) vaccine and a yearly flu vaccine. Also keeping a check on our mental health regularly could help!
Conclusion: Reyes Syndrome is indeed a rare disease with less than 500 cases per year. But it’s a very serious mental illness that causes one to face dire situations. It is in the best interest of all of us to open up and attend regular checkups. Mental illness is not to be taken easily. It’s not hard to prevent the disease, but it’s very hard to get cured out of it. So let’s pledge to our health and stay safe!

that was an interesting disorder to learn about. but I’m not clear how it is a psychological disorder and not a physical one. you could also explain the role of medicines in causing it. great work, keep it up!
An article that definitely extends the boundary of mental health into the world of medicine and thus creating better awareness.
