FIBROMYALGIA
INTRODUCTION
Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic (disease marked by inflammation and pain in the joints, muscles, or fibrous tissue) disorder which is characterised by pain, tenderness and stiffness in muscles all over the body as well as joints. People suffering from Fibromyalagia are more sensitive to pain than others. This condition is referred to as abnormal pain perception processing. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease therefore, just like other chronic diseases, Fibromyalgia patients suffer from fatigue and lack of energy. The condition can be controlled with the help of medicines but there is no permanent cure to Fibromyalgia.
SYMPTOMS
Sysmptoms of Fibromyalgia are as follows-
Pain throughout the body
Tenderness
Stiffness
Sleep problems
Fatigue
Sensitivity to light and sound
Headache
Irritable bowel syndrome
Tingling or numbness in hands and legs
Depression, anxiety
CAUSES
This condition is now considered to be central nervous system disorder which results from problems in central nervous system. According to research Fybromyalgia is caused because pain sensation in brain is amplified in affected people. This condition can be triggered by emotional stress, physical or psychological trauma, injury, arthritis, infection etc. Some doctors consider fibromyalgia to be a psychosomatic condition since it can not be detected in any test.
TREATMENT
None of the tests can diagnose Fibromyalgia. Doctors will rule out the possibility of other similar diseases with the help of various tests. Medication often is useful in treating the condition to some extent. Cognitive behavioral technique is also found to be very useful in treating patients of Fibromyalgia. Mindfulness techniques and massage therapies are also useful in controlling the condition. Physical exercise also helps Fibromyalgia patients.
PRAVALENCE
Women are more likely to be affected by Fibromyalgia than men. According to research done in 2009, prevalence of Fibromyalgia in India is 3.77% in rural area, 1.2% in urban are and 0.5% overall.
