I personally found this very helpful. I am in my final year of MSc Counselling Psychology. These were taught to us and we were given appropriate training from the start, but of course there are things I need to still work and improvise on. This article therefore proved to be that slight push I needed to act on my wishes 🙂

Also, the manner in which the author distinguished between empathy and sympathy reminded me of what my own facilitator had taught me two years ago.

Hi Sneha, thank you for sharing this , me personally being a counselor i would like share my opinions with regard to the article

1. Counsellor refers the counselee's as clients and not patients

2, Rapport building is very important, if proper rapport is not build that's when hardships arises greatly

3. It should never be difficult for a Counsellor to empathise, empathizing should happen at all levels of counselling and without empathy counselling can't happen.

4. Mental disorders should be referred to other professionals like psychologist/psychiatrist.

5. We as a Counsellor help clients only find solutions by helping them out and we don't give them direct solutions.

Thank you for suggesting this read! I'd love to become a counselor in the future, and this article is so insightful in providing the crux on how to be a good counselor. A lot of it overlaps with how to be a good human being firstly, where we have to be kind, non-judgmental and provide a safe space to others 🙂 Going to take that with me for future interactions.
