Hey everyone, I'm Gauri Kakar (she/her), a first year MBBS student. I've been a psychology student since the past two years. I never planned on taking in psychology, it came into my life by chance. I had science stream and my fifth subject was Home Science. One day, when the home science class didn't happen, we were made to sit in the psychology class. I thought of just completing my pending work, but then I came across the chapter that the teacher was teaching back then,' Human Memory' and she'd also include her personal experiences as a counselling psychologist. I was so interested, I took a look at the book, started reading and found that it's such a beautiful and a fascinating subject. I quit Home Science, took up psychology, and haven't regretted that decision since. I'm so thankful for that Home Science class not happening that day, or else I might never have the chance to study this mind boggling subject.

I've done a few internships, I plan on to specialising in psychiatry and become a psychiatrist to keep my passion for psychology going.

Psychology is the study of the mind and human behaviour. The subject is about how those around us think, what kind of feelings they experience, how they act and interact, and what motivates them. Psychology students learn to comprehend why people act in a certain way, how they respond to the world around them and which key factors might affect this. These might be social, biological, cognitive or emotional. Here are a few reasons why you should take up psychology as a subject:

  • Studying Psychology makes a person ask themselves various questions. It's an adventure to know ourselves and other people a little more each day.
  • Psychology is a social science that is based on scientific method.
  • The theories, approaches and areas that make up Psychology studies help to develop critical thinking. Critical thinking is a core skill, because only with it one is able to differentiate the wood from the trees, the lucidity of deceit, the reality of manipulation.
  • Studying psychology gives one a greater understanding of human relationships.
  • Studying psychology allows to tear down many of the myths that people believe about mental illness. One understands, for example, the differences between what is a syndrome, a disorder and a disease. One also realises that medication doesn’t cure certain diseases, it only “treats” them.
  • Studying psychology offers the opportunity to train later on in a wide range of specialities, so that one can choose which they like best. The options are many:
  • Clinical psychology
  • Educational psychology
  • Sports psychology
  • Forensic psychology
  • Health psychology
  • Organisational psychology
  • Child and adolescent psychology
  • Social or community psychology
  • Not many areas of study complement other disciplines as much as Psychology does. For example, one can have, a degree in journalism, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, philology, anthropology, art or economics and at the same time decide to start a degree in Psychology in order to acquire a much richer and more complete training, and a fascinating one at the same time.
  • At last, I'd just say Psychology is more than just a mind's game. It's a wholesome experience.

Thank you for reading:) Have a gorgeous day!

@gaurikakar Hi Gauri. This is so refreshing to read; and honestly, reading similar personal accounts like yours make me really happy. After all, tiny things have started to make me happy during these hard times :D. Let me say that you made a really wonderfully brave decision back then; yes, I agree Psychology is a wholesome experience. You have summed it up for us...

I have always been interested in Psychiatry. One thing I regret is the fact that I never had the exposure or the interest in Sciences to take up medicine. If I had the right kind of training, I would have absolutely loved to take up Psychiatry at some point in my life. However, I have made peace with it now. Reading this gives me hope; even if I couldn't do it, I am sure that there are many passionate people like you out there who would want to give that field a chance. I hope all your aspirations come true.

Keep the enthusiasm going. Good luck for your all current and future goals.
