[Solved] Finding subjects of interest

I've been someone who never really showed much preference for a particular subject back in school, so when people would ask me what my favourite subject was, I'd never really have an answer but to say that I liked everything apart from math. While I was decent at all my subjects, I was never really better at any one subject compared to the others. Then came the crucial years of my 9th and 10th grade where everyone feels pressured to choose subjects, with the entire experience being uncomfortable because I'd be asked about it by my parents, teachers and even not-so-close relatives.

My dad seemed quite assured of the fact that I would take up science, and for the longest time I was afraid to let him down. As my 10th grade progressed, I found it harder to keep up with maths, and developed a preference for subjects like social science and english. Based on that, I decided that I wanted to pursue arts, but did not have any specific goal in my head, no career goals, no idea about which subjects I would prefer. After countless conversations with my dad (who reluctantly let me take it up because of my mom's support) and explaining it to my science teachers, I finally took it up.

Then came the worries about, what if I grow tired of these subjects as well? Thank god for me, I met some of the best teachers in my life and finally found a subject that made me excited and got me talking about it all the time, psychology. Ever since then, I have continued to explore other fields as well, but I continue to hope that I gain the confidence to pursue this subject and find my happy place.

This experience also taught me how important it is to let students in school know of all their options beforehand so that they don't have to face the stress of taking up unfamiliar subjects. When I first told someone I took up arts, they asked me if i meant painting and dancing, and that ignorance disappointed me so much. While I'm glad that my intuitions led me to a path I loved, I believe that other students shouldn't have to base their futures on something so abstract, and I try to explain my subjects as thoroughly as possible to those who are not sure about the world outside the sciences. The condition has definitely been improving greatly, but I believe that by being aware, we can also help spread helpful information to help people explore and find their own subjects of interest 🌺

@janhavisiyer

I liked reading it . Everyone faces challenges in taking decisions in their own ways. And yours is one such experience that you've presented well.

Parishree Pandya December 12, 2020 8:42 pm

@janhavisiyer hey, I guess you're a good example to the world that we all find our way at some point. I'm glad you listened to your intuition and reached a place where you're happy to be.

@janhavisiyer felt very  nice to read about your story! Yes the schooling phase can be totally like a fun fair ride , you never know where it would turn the next. But doing what you love or finding out what you love and then chasing it is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Well done!

@janhavisiyer

i’m so happy that you followed your gut and not just walked on the path someone decided for you. You did a good job and i wish you continue  to do so!!

@janhavisiyer you've a very interesting story and i think many students can relate to it. You've a long way to go, keep learning.
Kanishka Mendiratta December 12, 2020 11:31 pm

@janhavisiyer In this world full of stereotypes, you took a stand for yourself and followed your interest, that's what we all should do.

Because at the end of the day it's just you and your dreams that you need to fulfill.

Keep growing and best of luck☺️🌟

@janhavisiyer Thank you for sharing your valuable experience. Feels good to know i'm not the only one who struggled with making that choice to shift from science to arts. I totally agree with you mentioning that students need to have a clearer picture of the options available to them when it comes to choosing a subject to graduate in. And choosing to pursue arts doesn't in any way make you lesser or reduce your career options than choosing science. People have to be made aware of the variety of options available in arts too!

Hey

It's so true that at student level gaining more exposure is definitely the best thing to do when you're interested to know more about a particular field. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Saumya Srivastava December 14, 2020 9:18 am

My journey is quite similar to yours, the only difference being I was more bothered by Science. And my father was more supportive than my mother. I took English, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, and Maths and this interdisciplinary combination worked wonders for me. We should always pursue the field where our interest lies.

Janhavi! Welcome to the club! Okay I don't know why I said that haha. I really like when people start showing interest in Psychology. I was pretty much like you, no favorite subjects, confused and so on. I'm glad you finally see some light and you're walking up ahead. No subject is a complete package of all the best things I believe. Each of them have theories and calculations and this and that. Try and look at it holistically and don't give up too soon. I can surely say that about Psychology considering I never really thought I'd pick this field but now I'm here and happier than ever. Hope you find the path that suits your energy the best. I'm really glad you're here 🤗

My experience was so similar to your's! As a kid, no subject really interested me until I started studying psychology. It is really surprising to see how you find your own interests out of the blue.

Janhavi S. Topic starter December 12, 2020 11:15 pm

@aratrika exactly! I know right. I feel like that has also given me the confidence that I'll find the things I love eventually and I try giving things more time and exploring, it genuinely feels like a life lesson sometimes.

Its really difficult to find subject which we like most and want to continue it

Hii. I have to say I do resemble a lot like you... except for the fact that I hated math. Nice to meet you. It is really true that some people misunderstand arts for drawing and painting, I face the same problems sometimes. I can totally relate to you.

Hello Jahnavi! You just addressed a major problem and flaw in our education system with your example. Students are given Career Counseling in countries like U.S. but in India relatives and pressure to take science is what we see in most of the cases and therefore so many cases of Job dissatisfaction. I am glad that you overcame it and pursuing your field of interest. I really hope you achieve huge success and extend your help to the ones facing similar issues through Counseling.
