Everyday, as a teenager, people around me would ask me what I want to become when I grow up. I didn't have an answer. I didn't know. They would make me feel like I was way behind for people my age. I didn't care then. But, when I came to 11th grade, these questions started to bother me until we started learning the subject of psychology in depth. I was relating my life to a subject I just got introduced to. I could put my emotions in words, my experiences in theories, and my interest in one direction. I started enjoying the subject for how I much I understood myself through it. I was curious to know more. I started attending everything I could, related to psychology. You would see me in every workshop or activity and it was the only boards project I enjoyed doing. I got closer to my psychology teachers and many other psychologists in 12th grade(my lowest phase), and that is when I got more insight. I realized the more deeper I dig, the more knowledge I am surrounded by, about myself and others around me. I started applying concepts to real life. I was enjoying this, while my parents were giving me options of subjects to think of later on. By now, I had made up my mind. I want to be a psychologist when I grow up. Clinical to be specific because I was more well versed with it (btw, this decision was after I learnt about other career options in psych). Let me get this clear, psychology is not an easy subject. Just because you relate to something, doesn't mean it is meant for you. There are many deeper aspects of this field that you would know about if you try to learn more through every medium you own, for eg, the internet. Just wanting to help people is not enough, you need to be dedicated to this subject, understand it and practice; it is not at all based on rote learning.

The notion that psychology is an easy subject is true! But I personally feel that to excel in this field we need to have a deep understanding as well as experience! Thank you for the insightful write up, Joanna❤

Completely agree with you! A lot of people are fascinated by the subject but unable to give it their all when studying it. There were points when I lost my passion for the subject too. My reasons had more to do with my concerns with the mental health industry, rather than the subject itself, and luckily, I was able to re-realise the reason I decided to study psychology in the first place.

Thank you for sharing your journey with psychology, as well as some insights. Are you currently pursuing your Bachelor's or Master's?

@tanishajain I'm currently pursuing my bachelor's

Well said Joanna! Although it might seem hard to swallow, interest and pursuing the subject for a career, are two different things, thanks for pointing that out. Nevertheless, having the basic understanding of psychology is important. Best of luck in whatever you're pursuing!

I'm glad you pointed out a very important we often forget while learning psychology. The practical one. It's important to know that psychology is a practical based study, not just about filling sheets with theories of some great psychologists but even applying them in real life. Infact, even these theories need an updated version which would be possible when we practice it in a real world setting. Goodluck and cheers🌻
