Unipolar (depression)

 

Depression (unipolar) is a type of affect disorder which is classified as mood disorder in DSM-5. This disorder can further be categorized into mild, moderate and severe. The depression takes a toll on the individuals physically, as they might experience lack of fatigue and constant feelings of tiredness, exhaustion or lethargy. Some individuals might experience a change in eating patterns or in their appetite as they might gain or lose weight. They can also experience a change in sleeping patterns, insomnia or hypersomnia.

As far as behavioral changes go, many times this type of depression causes changes in behavior of a person that might not be as noticeable to the eye of an outsider. People who suffer from unipolar depression often suffer from lack of motivation. They no longer enjoy activities that they might be fond of. They might display behaviors such as withdrawal and reduced concentration, the individual suffers to remember or from memory loss. Individual’s decision making is also impaired. The individual might also feel long periods of dread, numbness, despair, sadness, lack of motivation and hopelessness. People with unipolar depression might also suffer from extreme amounts of guilt and thoughts about suicide and some might also inflict self harm upon themselves.

The article did give a gist about mood disorder , but the symptoms should have been explained a bit more, as these symptoms which are experienced by a person in this the duration of symptoms matters as not every person might be feeling this. For eg: someone might have scored less in their exams and might have been sad for a week and disconnected might have some of these symptoms but the duration of MDD is atleast 2 weeks in a row if I am not wrong. So some might think they are depressed even if they are not. I hope I could get my point through.
