Living with someone with a Psychological Disorder

We’ve all come across at least one first-hand encounter of living with a psychological disorder of some sort. Living with a disorder can be very draining and is a huge shift from the normal course of life, it affects our thinking, behaviors, and mood at many points in time. Psychological Disorders. Psychological disorders often referred to as Mental Illness has been a taboo in societies throughout history. Disorders can be classified into anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, and psychotic disorders, dementia, and eating disorders.

Living with someone with a psychological disorder is something often not talked about, keeping the companion(s) informed about the disorder is as important as keeping the person informed. As much as a psychological disorder affects a person living with the disorder it also affects the people who he/she/they is or has been living with. Being informed about the vulnerabilities of your loved ones is the key step in this process which can be undertaken only through educating people about psychological disorders. Establishing transparency is another key process that helps in initiating key communication between the person living with a mental illness and the people surrounding her/him/they where the person gets to express feelings. Knowing how to treat/take care of a person living with mental illness is extremely important. Encouraging the person to seek help and making them feel comfortable in doing so can make a very big difference in the healing process.

How psychological disorders affect the companion depends on how much the person knows about mental illness. Reading books, articles, watching movies, documentaries can help in keeping one educated about the disorders. Along with helping the person living with a mental disorder, we must also take care of ourselves, being mentally and physically healthy is a very important factor. If one feels that it has started adversely affecting them he/she/they must keep in mind that it is important to seek help as soon as possible.

It was a sweet article describing how not just the mental health of the person suffering is important but how the state of mind of the person living with them is important too, though it is often ignored. I appreciate your post and I believe more such content is vital to help caregivers and family’s mental health be taken care of as well. Good job!
