Is online therapy as effective as offline therapy

Is online therapy as effective as offline therapy

THERAPY: Therapy is a form of treatment that aims to relieve your emotional distress and mental health problems.

The therapy can be given by professional trainers, psychologist and psychiatrist.

The therapy session is a process were the licensed therapist gives therapy session to the client.

In this therapy process, the therapist works with the emotional and mental health of the individual and they coordinately work together in order to bring a positive outcome.

During this therapy, the client exposes his feeling, thoughts, and his mental issues, by this the therapist understand the problem and helps to overcome different therapy sessions.

According to the client’s problem the therapy sessions varies.

Through this therapy session, the client can resolve their relationship issue, mental health issue, behaviour, belief and emotional issues.

THERAPIST: Do we need a therapist?

What does the therapist do?

What are the roles of the therapist?

If we have a problem or sadness or depression or some sort of mental issue we talk about it with our close friends or family members or relatives.

While discussing or sharing your problem they may give many solutions and different perspectives of the problem.

Each and everyone will say their opinion and solution to that problem.

But nobody gives a correct and permanent solution for that issue.

Even sometimes when you express your feeling or thoughts or problem to others you may judge sometimes.

Here was the therapist plays a major role in your life.

The therapist is here to listen to all your problem and sort it out with the psychotherapy.

They never judge you and helps you to solve your problems.

Therapist deeply analyses your problems, cause of the issue and resolve it during the therapy session.

Psychotherapy was probably first developed in the Middle East during the 9th century by the Persian physician and psychological thinker, Rhazes, who was at one time the chief physician of the Baghdad bipartisan.

Online therapy: it is also known as e- therapy, e-counselling, teletherapy or cyber counselling involves providing mental health services over the internet.

This online therapy service is done through email, text messaging, video conferencing, online chat, messaging, or internet phone.

Through this, the therapist gives therapy to the client.

Based on therapist availability of time and client convenience the session takes place.

The online therapy is followed in recent days.

Due to the pandemic situation, online therapy has got increased.

In this, the client attends their therapy session through mobile phones, laptops and tabs. Online therapy has many limitations it is not as like offline therapy.

There are many pros and cons included.

Distance communication between a therapist and client is not a new concept.

Sigmund Freud utilized letters extensively to communicate with his clients.

Self-help groups began emerging on the internet as early as 1982.

Nowadays there are many websites providing online therapy session.

How does online therapy works?

As we saw online therapy works based on the client and therapist convenience.

The therapist provides counselling through video call, email, and text and by the other means of internet facilities.

Based on the client’s problem, the therapist chooses a mode of providing therapy.

If the client is having depression and anxiety issues or basic stress problems the therapist may choose text or mail or any mode that is convenient for both of them.

If it is a small issue the therapist conducts two to three session. Based on the client issue the session is planned and organized.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ONLINE THERAPY AND OFFLINE THERAPY:

In offline therapy, the client and therapist have an eye to eye conversation where the therapist can easily observe the client behaviours thoroughly.

Offline therapy also is known as face to face therapy.

This is one that we followed for many years.

Online therapy builds a rapport between the client and the therapist.

Through this, the therapist can analyze the client in a better way and analyzes the problem easily.

In the online session, the client and therapist will have a conversation using video calls text emails through phone or laptops.

It is one of the easy of communication where the client and the therapist will be in their places.

Here the client can choose the time and makes comfortable times according to their work.

PROS AND CONS:

Both online therapy and offline therapies both pros and cons

Online therapy pros and cons

Online therapy helps to access mental health issue.

But people who are not able to access technology like mobile phones and laptop or people who are illiterate cannot access to this online therapy.

The main needed one for online therapy is an internet facility, people from remote areas cannot afford this online therapy.

Some therapist asks to pay high range amount for online therapy session which will not affordable for all.

Though it has some disadvantage it is easily accessible and the session can be planned according to the convenience.

In a review of studies published in the journal World Journal of Psychiatry, patients receiving mental health treatment through video conferencing reported “high levels of satisfaction.”

In one study, researchers found that online CBT combined with clinical care was effective in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and illness-related emotional distress.

In some cases, the results indicated that some patients actually had better outcomes with online treatment than those who had traditional in-person CBT.

CONCLUSION:

Though there are advantage and disadvantage in online therapy. It is one of the easiest way of access to mental health in this modern world. Due to technology development and pandemic situation we face right know our mental health is also getting worse nowadays.to have a stable mental both online and offline therapy is needed.

“Our wounds are often the openings into the best and most beautiful part of us.”

David Richo

“Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose, or paint can manage to escape the madness, melancholia, the panic and fear which is inherent in a human situation.”

Loved the way the introduction starts with talking about the therapy and the therapist and its two forms. It correctly explains the online form, which is more recent and useful in these times. The differences between the two are rightly pointed out and so are the pros and cons.

Amazing work Gajalakshmi. You put across the difference between online and offline therapy and it’s pros and cons very well. This year has been hard on so many people both physically and mentally. Many have also avoided therapy thinking offline is not of any help. Yes there are advantages and disadvantages to it but we have to take responsibility of our mental health. However I wish you would have also mentioned of how offline therapy is a problem not only because of unavailability of resources but also lack of support and encouragement. Even today people, mostly adolescents and young adults, see going to therapy/counselling as a bad thing and avoid telling their parents about it and tend to miss out on sessions due to this. But you article was very written and comforting. I look forward to read more of your works!

Information peice of article. Detailed well enough with odds and even in both online and offline way.
Although the demand of era is all over internet, but touching hand of manual working in any field can’t be touched still. Especially in psychology and human emotions, how can computers a machine can let us reach the depth of core feelings. Just a felt perception.

Sakhi Shanker

Due to advancement in technology and the new normal where everything is shifting to the online mode, this is a question most individuals entering or existing in the field have. How effective really is our medium of providing therapy. And you very honestly and crisply put forth both the pros and cons of each and concluded with the fact that both are equally important.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that online therapy has helped certain clients suffering from particular mood disorders deal and cope effectively.
Hope you continue writing on such important and relevant questions
